The Shell Invaders team have come up with a strategy to help ensure its fans are not entirely denied a 2020 Republic Day J’ouvert experience.

Citing that the Covid-19 pandemic has led to the suspension of major public events in the age of physical distancing, the band has introduced a Mask Invasion Competition. Contestants can take part digitally using Zoom.

In the midst of the pandemic, memories of past Invaders Republic Day J’ouvert kept popping up on social media. The reminders were consistent: freedom of expression and the love of steelpan music.

This prompted the management of Invaders to take the Republic Day J’ouvert concept virtual.

So, on Republic Day, between 4am to 7am, the public can join the Mask Invasion band virtually by Zoom link. The link will be tagged to the Invaders Facebook page for easy access. Patrons are encouraged to be creative and dress up in their J’ouvert gear, share their photos or videos, get their drink of choice, and party to the music of DJ Hans and Gonzo right in the comfort of their home.

An Ole Mask Competition is planned for the more adventurous and creative.  There are three categories – Individual; Small band (4 persons) and the window with the most vibes. Participants have to submit a short video of themselves or their crew by 10pm on September 23rd for judging. The videos will be shown throughout the J’ouvert presentation and winners will be announced on the day. Rules of the Ole Mask Competition are posted on the Invaders Facebook page along with Covid -19 guidelines. Winners will take home attractive cash prizes.

Invaders Steel Orchestra is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and regardless of the restrictions brought on by the pandemic the band’s management is committed to keeping the orchestra vibrant with in-house development programmes and virtual events.
