The Steelpan Authority will host the world’s first steelpan video and music recording awards ceremonies virtually in 2021.
Trinidad and Tobago will be the stage for the inaugural presentations developed by the media company, which aims to recognise and reward independent entertainers from around the world.
After five years of planning the video and music awards projects are being unveiled.
It comes in the absence of a dedicated programme of accolades to salute the dedicated outpouring of quality steelpan entertainment from emerging artistes and those at their pinnacle. Therefore, the Steelpan Authority has taken the requisite steps to fill these voids.
Using its dotcom brand Steelpantv.com, the first in a system of honours to be rolled out will be the SteelpanTV Video Music Awards, which is set for May.
Meanwhile, Steelpanauthority.com will take the lead in the execution of the Steelpan Music Awards seven months later – November.
The strategy to bolster steelpan excellence will take place under the Steelpan Authority’s Steelpan One World Initiative, which allows practitioners championing the cause of the steelpan across every continent, eligibility to vie for honours in the both productions.
Musicians and videographers who have formed amazing alliances and are consequently flooding digital media channels with exciting content will vie for accolades across 44 major categories and sub-divisions in the Video Music Awards. Categories at stake include: Video Of The Year; Artist Of The Year; Best Music Video On A Mobile Phone; Best Quarantine Video; Best Streaming Concert; Best Country Music Video; and Video To Advance Tourism.
Contenders for honours in the Steelpan Music Awards, meanwhile will pursue accolades in 50 main categories, as well as sub classes that so far surpasses 90 individual and group trophies. An adjudication panel will preside over entries for: Personality Of The Year; Spirit of The Steelpan; Artist Of The Year; Percussionist Of The Year; Best New Artiste; Educator Of The Year and Steelband of the Year.
While plans to roll out the latter production will see presentations of the Lifetime Achievement and Vanguard Awards, as well as educational grants, those honours, at least for now, will not be captured during the Video Music Awards.
The original proposal called for musicians to vie for top steelpan honours at a single awards show, but a re-evaluation done by Steelpan Authority consultants determined that with live performances and other dedications to be added, the production could become both lengthy and laborious. In the end, the decision was made for the awards to be presented in two parts.
And, citing the crucial role culture lovers play in the growth and development of artistes through their respective mediums, the organising committees for both projects will include People’s Choice Awards in some category.
Entries for the Video Music Awards will capture works published after Ash Wednesday 2019 through 2021, while submissions for the Steelpan Music Awards will go as far back as the start of the lenten season 2018 up to February 17, next year.
At the second annual staging of both awards, however, submissions entered for consideration must fall between Ash Wednesday of the previous year to the start of lent in the year of the production.
In a release, Sean Nero, Team Lead, Operations at the Steelpan Authority said, “The impact of Covid-19 on the artistic community is challenging the creative sector to be just that…creative. So, we present the two-part award project. This pandemic saw an uptick in material from artistes globally for an audience in need. During the first lock-down, passing the time caused many to discover quality material in video and audio formats from steelpan exponents. That caused them to like and share. But when we think of the investment of musicians and their creative collaborators, likes and shares simply won’t go far enough. So, the Steelpan Authority is unveiling its suite of reward programmes.”
He cited the tremendous financial investment and sweat equity that goes into producing video and audio content, be it location scouting, applying for permission from agencies for property use, recruiting extras, editing, engineering and mastering.
Nero lamented that after all the pre-production and post-production work there was still no avenue for recognition. The Steelpan Authority family of brands, he said, simply did not believe this should remain the norm.
“Too many people across the world are watching and wondering what the next step should be for the advancement of the steelpan, which Trinidad and Tobago has gifted to the world. Team Steelpan Authority and SteelpanTV through the Steelpan One World Initiative will take up the challenge to chart the next exciting phase of steelpan entertainment and rewards and truly take its rightful place as part of the billion-dollar US global entertainment industry,” Nero said.
